Company Overview
Series B company operating in a massive, under-automated contact center market, with $113M+ in funding from notable investors. Runs voice AI agents in production for enterprises, in a market that's roughly 1% automated. 150 employees, ~46 on engineering, growing to ~61 in the next 6 months following a recent funding milestone.
The Role
Seasoned Engineering Manager to lead and grow a squad of 8–15 engineers as part of a tight, peer-based management team of 6 that collectively owns all engineering department decisions. This is a dedicated people-management role — not a player-coach position. You'll own hiring, career development, performance management, and budget/headcount planning, while staying largely out of day-to-day code reviews and architecture decisions.
What You'll Do
- Own hiring, career growth, performance management, and budget/headcount for your squad
- Operate as a peer on a management team that meets multiple times weekly
- Set the pace for fast shipping and a fail-fast, learn-quickly culture
- Drive predictable, high-quality delivery tied to customer value
- Help turn individual AI experimentation into team-level throughput and production results
- Partner closely with Product and cross-functional teams
Requirements (Dealbreakers)
- 5+ years managing software engineering teams of 8+ engineers, including hiring and performance management
- Credible technical background — strong enough foundation that senior engineers trust your judgment (support/QA/SRE-only paths into management don't qualify)
- People-manager and servant-leader first — wants to spend time on career growth, performance, and team health; comfortable staying out of code/architecture
- Must be based in the US or Canada
- Willing to travel roughly every 6 weeks for in-person team gatherings
Baseline Expectations
- 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in engineering management
- Early-stage or high-growth experience — ideally joined a startup around ~20 people and scaled through 100+ (or an equivalent 0-to-1 growth story inside a larger company)
- Hands-on AI fluency — real, specific experience with modern AI tools, what was built, what models were used, what worked/didn't
Nice to Have
- Founder/co-founder background, or 0-to-1 experience building a new product area
- Experience building teams that ship ambitious, boundary-pushing products
- Background in conversational AI, telephony, ML, or real-time infrastructure
- Brings a specialty to a peer management team (career ladders, performance calibration, process improvement); operates well in high-candor, disagree-and-commit environments
Compensation & Logistics
- $250K–$300K base (US); salary bands differ for Canada
- 100% remote, US/Canada-based, with travel every ~6 weeks for offsites
- Competitive equity — meaningful stock option grants
- Visa sponsorship generally not available (US citizens/Green Card holders); open to TN visas for Canadian candidates
